The Unwanted Horse Veterinary Relief Campaign will be providing free Merck Animal Health equine vaccines to qualifying equine facilities. To qualify, facilities must have 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status and follow the AAEP Care Guidelines for Equine Rescue and Retirement Facilities. Facilities must work with an AAEP-member veterinarian when applying. Ashley Cashwell from Bristol Veterinary Service is one of two veterinary technicians in the country to receive the Champions of the Cause Award from Boehringer Ingelheim. The other winner was Lisa Amtower from Rhinebeck Equine Hospital in Rhinebeck, N.Y. From The Horse: Effective Dec. 1, horses granted a therapeutic use exemption can remain on pergolide with no drug withdrawal prior to competition and no need to file a medication report form each time they compete. Pergolide has been the mainstay treatment of pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID), also known as equine Cushing’s disease, for several decades.
