20 Jan Miami Animal Import Center Closed To New Arrivals Due To Illness Outbreak
The USDA's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency (APHIS) has reported that the Miami Animal Import Center will be temporarily closed to new arrivals of horses beginning on Jan. 19 in response to illness in a handful of horses quarantined at the facility. APHIS is investigating to determine the specific cause of illness, but salmonella is suspected, and the facility is stepping up biosecurity and taking additional precautions to prevent any further disease spread. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is calling on manufacturers of animal dewormers to voluntarily modify their product labels. According to an FDA-issued press release, the request is being issued in an effort to preserve the effectiveness of drugs intended to treat certain internal parasites in livestock and horses. The agency would like the labels to include more information on antiparasitic resistance.
