Guidelines for Utilization of EQ CrVT

The AAEVT is proud to release our Guidelines for the Utilization of the CrVT documents!

This work was based on the AAHA Utilization Guidelines resource that was released in 2022 which was small animal based. Deb Reeder, LVT, VTS-EVN(R), AAEVT Emeritus, approached the AAEVT Executive Team and asked to spearhead a Task Force to create a similar document that was Equine only in focus. The Task force was made up of Deb and 5 CrVT technicians ( Travis Otremba, Jlynn Meyer, Andrea Whittle, Karen Chapman and Sue Novik) and Wiss Costanza (ED). They worked diligently and presented a draft at the AAEVT AAEP Annual Conference. We then collaborated with the AAEP and asked for their input.

These are the documents as of March 2024: They are working documents, as we all know our profession and the rules and regulations continue to change. Please note that the actual Guidelines document is the property of the AAEVT and no edits can be made to that document without the permission of the AAEVT. Deb Reeder is continuing to lead this work, working with the AAEP, and will be presenting on the process and the actual Guidelines at the AVMA Annual Convention in June 2024. A Zoom call is also in the works for our members. We also want to thank Dr. Kelly Zeytoonian and Dr. Amy Grice for their input and support!

Memorandum of Understanding

There exists a lack of understanding of the education and credentialing process for a CrVT. There is a lack of CrVT’s to fulfill the need – especially in equine veterinary medicine. CrVT’s are leaving the field or not entering the field due to: lack of utilization to allow them to practice at the level of their license, lack of acceptable pay based on their education and skill level, lack of recognition for their commitment to being a medical professional, and a lack of standardization in State laws, education, and public awareness.

The CrVT can be fully utilized to relieve the burden of overworked, too few, and stressed equine veterinarians where allowed by State law. They are the partners in providing health care to our equine patients and allow for the DVM to be able to practice at the top of their license, while allowing for the CrVT to practice at the top of theirs. Utilizing the CrVT will create a practice where individuals can flourish, workflows are enhanced and efficient, clients and patients are better served, income centers can grow, and the Horse has the benefit of all of us collaborating for their health.

These documents are meant to be a Guideline only – not Rules and Regulations. They are being offered as an educational resource for better understanding of the paraprofessional members of your Team. These Guidelines are not meant to exclude the utilization, recognition, or respect of your veterinary assistants, as we recognize they are valuable members of the veterinary team.

State Laws, Rules and Regulations: There are 52 varieties, and it is very confusing… Here is where you can look up your individual state laws and Rules and Regulations regarding the direction, supervision, and utilization of your CrVT and your veterinary assistant/ lay personnel.
