4 N.C. horses contract rare neurological EHV-1 
North Carolina agriculture officials say four Raleigh, N.C., horses that were recently euthanized had the uncommon neurological manifestation of the equine herpesvirus, or EHV-1. Neurological EHV-1 is difficult to distinguish from rabies, West Nile virus and Eastern equine encephalitis, according to veterinarian Tom Ray, director of animal health programs for the state agriculture department. The first sign of the disease is generally fever, Dr. Ray said. Other horses at the boarding facility where the cases appeared are under quarantine and being monitored. The News & Observer (Raleigh, N.C.
