TEVA  AAEVT Summer Symposium 2009

Inaugural TEVA/AAEVT Summer Symposium

August 6-9th, 2009 we were honored to have hosted an Equine Veterinary Technician seminar alongside the newly formed “Texas Equine Veterinary Association.”  The Texas Equine Veterinarians were crucial in helping the AAEVT organization get off the ground with our first two seminars ever having been held in Texas back in 2003/2004.  So it was a great privilege and a homecoming to bring the AAEVT’s latest totally equine dedicated seminar back to the Lone Star State! We presented a full day of scientific lectures, a full day of wet labs and a half day of practice management!

·        Thursday evening all participants were welcomed by TEVA with a lakeside social at the Yacht club!

·        Friday a full day of scientific lectures were presented including such world renowned speakers as Dr. Dennis Brooks with the University of Florida speaking on “Ophthalmic Exams”, Dr. Thomas Divers from Cornell University speaking on “Maximizing the Use of Hematology in Equine Practice”,  and Dr. Michael Ross from the New Bolton Center speaking on “Surgical Management of Soft Tissue Injuries.”

·        Friday Night we all gathered in a very scenic outdoor setting to enjoy some fabulous Texas style cuisine and hospitality followed by some boot-scooting to the legendary Gary P. Nunn!!!!!

·        Saturday we were bused to the wetlabs hosted by Austin Equine Associates in Driftwood, Texas.  There participants chose from 12 wet lab selections such as: “Technical Procedures in Podiatry Exams,” by Dr. Dustin Dorris of Reata Equine, “General Anesthesia” by Dr. Nora Matthews from Texas A&M, and even a “Nerve and Joint Block Lab” presented by the Head of the Texas A&M Large Animal Hospital and the current president of the Texas Equine Veterinary Association, Dr. Bill Moyer!!!!

·        Saturday evening the AAEVT hosted a social where we had a great time mingling and raising scholarship funds with our raffle!

·        Sunday we had a very enlightening and entertaining presentation by the phenomenal Jan Hargrave regarding “Body Language.”

All in all it was a huge success!  We are already discussing plans for next year.  Of course we need to thank  our gracious sponsors: Asteris, Bayer, Boehringer Ingelheim Vetmedica Inc., Dechra, Fort Dodge Animal Health, Luitpold, Purina Feeds, Sound-Eklin, and Surgi Vet/Smiths Medical.  Without them and all of our sponsors we could not have brought you such awesome CE during these tough economic times for the registration fee of $100 dollars for lectures, wetlabs and socials!!!!!
The AAEVT would like to thank Sandy Nunn for all of her hard work to organize this symposium.
